Montgomery County Food Bank is bringing its biggest name yet to the stage. Cat Cora, who made history in 2005 as the first woman named an Iron Chef on Food Network's "Iron Chef America," will headline the Food Bank's inaugural Flourish & Nourish Ladies Luncheon on Thursday, October 22, at The Blue Magnolia in Magnolia.

The event is presented by Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital and co-chaired by Food Bank board members Jacqueline Huntsman Calder and Krystle Riley, who also serves as Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital. Guests can expect a champagne reception, a "Beauty, Bubbles & Bling" prize pull, and a fireside chat and Q&A with Cora moderated by KPRC 2 news anchor Lisa Hernandez. Beyond her Iron Chef title, Cora is also the first woman inducted into the American Academy of Chefs Culinary Hall of Fame, and she founded Chefs for Humanity, a nonprofit built around fighting hunger through relief work and nutrition education.

"There is power in a room of women who decide that hunger in their community is a challenge they can help solve," co-chairs Calder and Riley said of the event. Scott Burns, President and CEO of Montgomery County Food Bank, put it more directly: Cora's platform and her track record fighting hunger made her the natural choice to launch the luncheon.

The need behind the event is real. In 2025 alone, Montgomery County Food Bank distributed more than 10 million meals, with neighbors turning to it an average of 90,000 times a month. Every dollar raised at Flourish & Nourish goes directly toward that work.

Why this matters: a chef with a national platform picked Montgomery County for her first stop here, and that kind of visibility for a local hunger-relief effort doesn't come along often.

A Woodlands family got a rare double sighting last week, and it started with the kids in the neighborhood gathering under a front-yard oak tree to gawk at the biggest caterpillar any of them had ever seen. Minutes later, while wandering through a native garden just across the driveway, something else stopped them cold: a luna moth, wings spread wide and pale green, perched motionless on a shrub.

The moth didn't fly off. It stayed still long enough for a close look and a few photos, its long tail-like wing extensions and delicate transparent "windows" on full display. As it turns out, both the caterpillar and the moth belong to the same family of giant silk moths, Saturniidae, one of the largest and most striking moth groups in North America. Luna moths carry a wingspan of up to four and a half inches and, oddly enough, don't eat at all as adults. They live for about a week on energy stored back when they were caterpillars, with one job: find a mate.

The Woodlands' mix of native trees, sweetgum, hickory, walnut, persimmon, and sumac among them, makes the community especially good habitat for luna moths, which explains why sightings like this one aren't as rare here as they'd be elsewhere.

Why this matters: sometimes the best thing that happens in a day is unplanned, and this is a good reminder of how much is quietly living in our own backyards.

The Woodlands Arts Council is giving its signature fall event a new identity. What's run for two years as the Texas Fine Craft Show will debut this September 26 and 27 as The Woodlands Fine Craft, Art & Design Show, held at The Woodlands Waterway Marriott Hotel's Town Center North Exhibit Hall.

The new name reflects where the show has grown. What started as a fine craft showcase has expanded to include more art and design work, while keeping its original commitment to handmade, juried craftsmanship front and center. "Over the years, we've listened to our artists, patrons, sponsors, and community, and this evolution reflects what they've told us they value most," said Jenny Carattini-Wright, Executive Director and CEO of The Woodlands Arts Council. She added that the goal was to expand the visitor experience while keeping exceptional fine craft at the show's heart.

The event has become a curated indoor weekend built around shopping, discovery, and meeting the artists behind the work, drawing exhibitors and visitors from across Greater Houston.

Why this matters: a show that's spent two years building a following in The Woodlands just signaled it's not staying small, which is good news for anyone who likes discovering local and visiting artists in one place.

Husband and wife David Gonzalez and Valentina Reyes opened Tacos Santos in Spring with one simple goal: bring the real flavors and culture of Tijuana-style street food north, to a place where people would feel like family the moment they walked in.

Both grew up in Las Vegas with the same go-to spot, Tacos El Gordo, a Tijuana-based taqueria institution known for its tacos de adobada, better known outside the region as tacos al pastor. After moving to Houston in 2018, the couple spent years hunting for tacos that matched what they grew up on. They found good food, but never quite the full experience, so they spent the next several years developing their own concept and recipes. Tacos Santos opened its doors in Spring in May 2025.

The taqueria has since built a loyal following for its adobada tacos and Southern California-style touches like carne asada fries, alongside a nostalgic design that leans into the couple's shared roots.

Why this matters: a taco spot built out of two people's exact childhood memory of a specific place is the kind of authenticity that's hard to fake, and it landed right here in Spring.

Before it was the name of our community, "The Woodlands" belonged to someone else first: the Mitchell family's own ranch, off SH 149 between Magnolia and Montgomery. George Mitchell's daughter Pamela won a family naming contest with that very name, but when it came time to name the new town, they gave the ranch a different name instead, Cook's Branch, so "The Woodlands" was free to become what we call home today.
