Lobb's Padel officially opened July 6 at the new Dudley Sports Plaza on FM 1488, bringing the first dedicated padel club to the immediate Woodlands area. The indoor facility features five premium courts, open play sessions, leagues, and a junior academy led by an international-level coach.

Padel, a racquet sport that blends elements of tennis and squash on a smaller, walled court, has become one of the fastest-growing sports in the world. Until this year, the nearest dedicated clubs to The Woodlands sat inside the Beltway, a substantial drive for local players who wanted to try it.

Lobb's is part of a larger buildout at Dudley Sports Plaza, an $8 million, 75,000-square-foot sports complex near the intersection of Kuykendahl Road and FM 1488. The plaza also houses Slick City Action Park, an indoor amusement concept built around dry slides, jungle gyms, and a freestyle air court, with an Elite Pickleball Club and Academy also planned for the site. Beyond the courts themselves, Lobb's offers recovery amenities including a cold bath and sauna, a pro shop, and its own coffee and bar setup meant to double as a social gathering spot before and after play.

Why it matters: this is the first credible second commercial hub The Woodlands has had within its own footprint, giving residents on the west side of the community a reason to stay local for a Saturday night out.

Clyde Fravel III of Tomball made his 50th consecutive appearance at the United States Bowling Congress Open Championships this month, joining the tournament's exclusive 50-Year Club during this year's event in Reno, Nevada. The 70-year-old was honored in a presentation at the National Bowling Stadium, receiving a plaque, chevron, and diamond lapel pin to mark the milestone.

Fravel made his tournament debut back in 1976 in Oklahoma City and hasn't missed a year since. He was joined in Reno by his wife of 40 years, Robbie, while his daughter Emily and grandson Carter cheered him on from home. "Being older, I was always concerned about my health and making sure I'm healthy to bowl," Fravel said, recalling a torn arm tendon he fought through a few years ago to keep the streak alive.

He credits a younger group of bowlers he now competes alongside for keeping him sharp on the technology and lane-reading side of the sport. Fravel's not done chasing numbers, either: he's aiming for 100,000 career pins, a target he calculates will take about 10 more years of steady bowling to reach.

Fravel was the final bowler to join the 50-Year Club in 2026, bringing the tournament's all-time total to 420 members.

Why it matters: showing up to the same tournament for half a century, through injuries and everything else life throws at a person, is its own kind of quiet discipline worth noticing.
