Good morning, The Woodlands.

This is issue 100, which is one way to measure time. Another way: Tomball ISD is about to launch the first virtual cybersecurity academy in Texas, giving eighth graders a path to an associate degree before they leave high school, at no cost. Oleon has formally opened the first North American production plant it has ever built, right here in Conroe. And this Sunday, Cantona Homestead in Tomball opens its gates for Día de los Fieles Difuntos: altars, marigolds, music, and the act of saying names out loud. The next hundred editions are going to be interesting.

Glad you’re here,

Tomball ISD Virtual Academy of Cybersecurity announcement

Tomball ISD Is Launching the First Virtual Cybersecurity Academy in Texas

Tomball ISD has approved the state's first virtual cybersecurity academy, giving high schoolers a path to earning both a diploma and an associate degree at no cost before they graduate.

The Tomball Virtual Academy of Cybersecurity is a four-year, fully online program built in partnership with Sam Houston State University's Polytechnic College. Students who complete it earn a high school diploma and an Associate of Applied Science degree, including up to 60 college credit hours, without paying tuition. The inaugural cohort is the current class of eighth graders, starting in Fall 2027.

Applications open October 26 for current Tomball ISD eighth graders through the district's Home Access Center. Statewide applications open November 30. Virtual information sessions are scheduled for October 21 at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m., and October 23 at 1 p.m. For login links, contact [email protected].

Why it matters: A program that gets a student to an associate degree before they leave high school, at zero cost, is a genuine head start. That Tomball ISD is building this at the statewide level says something about how seriously this district takes its own ambition.

Oleon esterification facility inauguration ribbon cutting in Conroe

Oleon Officially Opens Its North American Esterification Facility in Conroe

After years of building toward it, Oleon formally opened the esterification unit at its Conroe facility this October, completing its first fully integrated manufacturing site in North America.

The plant, which Oleon established in Conroe in 2023, now produces specialty esters from renewable raw materials, including compounds used in lubricants, oil and gas applications, and industrial fluids. The esterification unit became fully operational in September, and total investment in the site now exceeds $50 million.

The inauguration on October 15 brought together the Conroe/Lake Conroe and Woodlands Chambers of Commerce, company leadership, and local stakeholders. Conroe Mayor Pro Tem John T. Sellars addressed the crowd: "Today, we celebrate much more than the opening of a new plant. We celebrate an investment. We celebrate innovation. We celebrate jobs and opportunity."

Why it matters: A European company choosing to build its first North American production plant here, and then expanding it, signals real confidence in this region. Conroe has been steadily building its industrial identity, and Oleon is now part of that story.

🌳 Woodlands Trivia

The Woodlands was designed so that no resident would be more than half a mile from a park. Today the community has 151 parks connected by 220 miles of hike and bike trails. That trail network is longer than the drive from The Woodlands to Austin.
