Good morning, The Woodlands.

There is a moment in a hospital lobby when a patient stops walking because someone nearby is painting. The Pavilion is funding that moment at Houston Methodist The Woodlands this fall. That is not a metaphor for this edition, but it is close: a neighborhood urgent care built around a doctor who sees her patients at Friday night football, a Rapid DNA program cutting months to hours, a studio where Project Beacon clients make work that ends up at auction. Art as medicine, care as a neighbor relationship. That is the thread.

Glad you’re here,

Annette Palmer artist-in-residence at Houston Methodist The Woodlands

How Concert Revenue at the Pavilion Is Getting Art Into a Hospital and a New Studio

The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion funded more than $1.3 million in arts grants this year, and two of them are reaching people far beyond the concert stage.

Through a new Big Idea grant program, the Pavilion placed artist-in-residence Annette Palmer at Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital. Palmer works in patients' rooms and in the hospital lobby, painting and inviting people to stop and talk. The program is an extension of Houston Methodist's Center for Performing Arts Medicine, which started on the main campus and is now expanding to satellite hospitals. The goal is to bring unexpected moments of connection and joy into a hospital setting, where a patient focused on a treatment might welcome something to look at or talk about instead.

A second Big Idea grant funds a collaboration between The Woodlands Art League and Project Beacon, which serves adults with neurodiversities. Before their first studio visit, Project Beacon staff worked with Woodlands Art League artists to prepare participants for what a studio is and what artists do. Some of the artwork created through the program was auctioned at Project Beacon's gala. A full art show featuring the work is planned for 2027 at the Kevin Brady Community Center in Grogan's Mill Village.

Why it matters: The Pavilion has been part of this community's identity for decades. Seeing that institution use its revenue to put an artist in a hospital room, or to open a studio to adults who may never have stepped inside one, is one of those quiet local stories worth knowing.

Montgomery County Sheriff's Office first in Texas to submit through Rapid DNA program

Montgomery County Sheriff's Office Becomes First in Texas Through the Rapid DNA Program

The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office announced it is the first county sheriff's office in Texas to submit a sample through the Rapid DNA program, a milestone the agency describes as a step forward in how it investigates crimes and pursues justice.

Rapid DNA is a fully automated process that produces a DNA profile from a qualifying sample in roughly one to two hours. Traditional DNA analysis through a laboratory typically takes several months. The shorter timeline means investigators can develop leads sooner, identify potential suspects earlier, connect evidence to individuals while cases are still active, and bring answers to victims and families when it matters most.

The Sheriff's Office credited the Texas Department of Public Safety and its own team for making the milestone possible, framing the adoption as part of a broader commitment to innovation, collaboration, and accountability in service of Montgomery County.

Why it matters: DNA testing has long been one of the bottlenecks in criminal cases, sometimes sitting in a queue for months. A two-hour turnaround changes what investigators can do and when. For a county the size of Montgomery, that is a meaningful shift.

Get to Know Your Friendly Neighborhood Urgent Care

Get to Know Your Friendly Neighborhood Urgent Care

Dr. Betsy Koickel, Interim Medical Director of Memorial Hermann-GoHealth Urgent Care, still practices medicine in her own community. She describes what makes the model work: seeing the same neighbors in the center and at the school pickup line and the grocery store, building a kind of relationship that she says reminds her of what it meant to be a small-town doctor.

Memorial Hermann-GoHealth Urgent Care is a 50/50 joint venture between Memorial Hermann and GoHealth Urgent Care, with 28 locations across the Greater Houston area. Seven of those locations are open until midnight daily. Patients can walk in, check in online, or book a virtual urgent care visit. Because the partnership runs through Memorial Hermann, patients receive priority connections to specialists within the Memorial Hermann network, and providers have direct access to a patient's electronic medical records.

According to a 2025 survey commissioned by the partnership and conducted by Wakefield Research, 39 percent of Houston residents said they were more likely to use urgent care that year because of new centers opening nearby, compared with 28 percent nationally. The same survey found that 57 percent of Houston residents seek care at the very first sign of illness. Services across locations include treatment for illnesses and injuries, on-site lab testing, X-rays, sports physicals, and virtual urgent care visits.

Why it matters: Urgent care has quietly become how most families here handle things that do not need an emergency room but cannot wait for a scheduled appointment. Knowing what this network offers, and where, is worth having in the back of your head.

🌳 Woodlands Trivia

Lamar Elementary, The Woodlands' first public school, opened in 1971, three years before the community's official grand opening. It served the families of construction workers and early arrivals already living on site while Grogan's Mill was still being built.
