Good morning, The Woodlands.
Thursday morning at College Park, The Woodlands put two teams on the cross country trail and brought home two championship trophies. Boys and girls, same morning, same result. A day later, the girls volleyball team walked onto Grand Oaks' court and ended a win streak that had lasted more than five full seasons. And over the weekend, The Woodlands Art League filled a gallery with 122 works from local artists, including a best of show that will make you slow down. The schools and studios around here tend to show up all at once, and today we get to tell you about it.
Glad you’re here,
—Erika & Mike

The Woodlands Art League Celebrates Its 2026 Art Exhibit & Juried Show With 122 Works

The Woodlands Art League's 2026 Art Exhibit & Juried Show filled Sam Houston State University's The Woodlands Center with 122 works from Oct. 16 through 18. League President Jim Kuykendall introduced judge Charlie Bullock, an art teacher and award-winning artist, who announced the winners and critiqued the first-place pieces.
Jim McGregor won Best of Show Adult for a landscape of a small waterfall wrapped in autumn color, which also earned a first-place ribbon. The crowd voted for its own favorite: Eric Platt's "Zultan Speaks," the interactive fortune-teller cabinet, took second place in sculpture and won the People's Choice Award.
The show also served as a qualifier for the Lone Star Art Guild. Artists who placed first through third or earned first honorable mention, and who belong to a guild-member art league, can advance to the guild's regional competition next year. Even the reception played along: one appetizer arrived framed on an easel, with a chalkboard sign announcing, "I am edible."
Why it matters: For local artists, a juried show close to home can be the first step toward a regional stage; for everyone else, it was a chance to see what artists are making right now.

College Park Ends Grand Oaks’ 71-Win Girls Volleyball Streak

The streak started before some current players were in high school. Grand Oaks’ girls volleyball team had gone 71 consecutive district matches without a loss, spanning more than five full seasons, before College Park walked onto their court Friday and ended it. Final score: 3–1. The Cavaliers had lost to Grand Oaks in a five-set battle back in September, so they knew what they were walking into.
The win moves College Park to 10–2 in district play, one game behind Grand Oaks at 11–1. Both schools, along with The Woodlands, have already clinched playoff spots. The final week of the regular season still has plenty at stake: Grand Oaks, College Park, and The Woodlands are jockeying for seeding, while Willis and Oak Ridge are competing for the last playoff berth.
The regular season wraps up Friday, October 23, with the UIL postseason to follow.
Why it matters: 71 consecutive district wins is a number you hear once. The Woodlands area produced both the streak and the team that ended it.

The Woodlands Sweeps the District Cross Country Championships

On a humid October morning at the College Park course, The Woodlands sent two teams out and brought two championships back. The Highlanders swept the boys and girls varsity titles at the 2026 District 13-6A Cross Country Championships Thursday, with a dominant showing in both divisions.
The boys team scored 27 points to hold off College Park at 38, with a senior leading the charge and breaking the course record. The girls were even more decisive: 20 points, with five Highlanders among the first seven finishers. A senior claimed her second consecutive individual district title. Both teams advance to the UIL postseason.
College Park finished second in both divisions, keeping the rivalry between the two schools competitive across every sport this fall.
Why it matters: Boys and girls titles in the same morning. That doesn’t happen often. The Woodlands ran away with both.

This Conroe Music Venue is the Buc-ee’s of Live Music
Four and a half years in, owner Frank Jackson still hears the same thing when people walk in for the first time: “We can’t believe this is in Conroe.” His response is always the same: where have you been? The Table at Madeley, at 316 Madeley Street in downtown Conroe, has been quietly building a reputation as one of the area’s best live music spots: Red Dirt and Texas country, three food trucks, a full bar, and a patio under oak trees that feels exactly like a Texas night out should.
The music runs Thursday through Saturday every week, with some Sundays added in. October’s lineup includes an appearance by Sundance Head, the winner of Season 11 of NBC’s The Voice, alongside songwriter nights and regular touring acts. Also this month: “Saving Ta-Tas at The Table,” a breast cancer benefit in partnership with the Conroe Fire Fighters Association, supporting My Hope Chest.
The Fix by PR handles BBQ and tacos, Gabino’s does wood-fire pizza, and the Grapeleaf Mediterranean Truck rounds out the food options. The venue seats up to 60 inside and opens onto a picnic patio outside. Doors open at 4 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, 11 a.m. Saturdays, and noon Sundays.
Why it matters: Conroe has a music scene that most people north of the county line haven’t found yet. The Table has been here four and a half years, waiting.

🌳 Woodlands Trivia
In 1964, George Mitchell purchased 50,000 acres north of Houston from the Grogan-Cochran Lumber Company, which had been harvesting timber there for decades. The forested land that defines The Woodlands today was once a working industrial logging operation.
🤠 Talkin' Texan
“Bless your heart.” Translation: context-dependent, and that’s the whole point. It can be genuine sympathy. It can also mean you’ve just said something very foolish. Texans know which one they mean, and so does the room.
