Good morning, The Woodlands.
Picture a school week where Tuesday and Friday lessons arrive on a screen. For some families here that is the plan, and it took real thought to get there.
Planning ahead runs through today's issue, and Seeds & Fruits is the story that stayed with us most.
Glad you’re here,

Township Approves $231,600 Study of an Indoor Sports Facility
The Woodlands Township board of directors voted 6-0 on Oct. 22 to approve a task order for a new study of an indoor recreation facility. Burditt Consultants was chosen for the work, which will run in three phases. The $231,600 study will be paid from the township's parks needs assessment reserve. Chief Operating Officer Chris Nunes said the order determines feasibility and does not start construction.
Phase 1 looks at three scenarios for a field house, and the size will depend on community needs and costs that are still to be determined. Phase 2 covers operating costs and possible revenue. Board Chair Brad Bailey said he doesn't want the facility to compete with local businesses, and that it could serve several uses through a possible partnership with Conroe ISD. The district won't consider the terms of any partnership until the study is finished.
Nunes called parking the biggest challenge in planning a sports facility. Director Shelley Sekula-Gibbs said that because the township is looking for ways to reduce traffic, the project could also be a chance to bring in transportation discussions, and she asked Burditt to look at both sides of the road.
Why it matters: Nothing is being built yet, but the study will show whether a field house is workable, and any partnership with Conroe ISD waits until it is done.

Conroe ISD Board Votes 6-1 Against Using March 29 as a Make-Up Day
The Conroe ISD board of trustees took up the question of making up weather days at its Oct. 20 meeting. The district closed schools on Sept. 1 because of dangerous weather and lengthened the school day starting Oct. 13 to recover the time. The calendar has an inclement weather day on March 29, which many in the district treat as a holiday, but it was not built with spare minutes.
Assistant Superintendent for High Schools Mark Murrel said the district has to change the schedule, either by adding another inclement weather day or by adding minutes to the remaining school days. State rules require at least 75,600 minutes of instruction a year. Using March 29 would end a planned four-day Easter weekend, which Murrel said would affect families, staff trips and morale.
In a district survey, 3,917 employees responded. Of those respondents, 43.4% backed adding five minutes a day for the rest of the school year, 25.3% backed adding only two to three minutes, and 15.6% backed using March 29. Board member Melissa Dungan supported a motion to skip added minutes and use March 29 instead, and the board voted 6-1 against it. Planning for the 2027-28 calendar starts in November, and the board will vote on it by Jan. 19 at the latest.
Why it matters: The motion to use March 29 failed, so the planned four-day Easter weekend stays on the calendar for now.

Seeds & Fruits Christian Academy Opens With a Hybrid K-6 Model
Seeds & Fruits Christian Academy opened its first semester on Aug. 19 in The Woodlands, founder Giewee Hammond said. The school serves grades K-6.
It runs a teacher-led hybrid model. Students are in class three days a week, and classes on Tuesdays and Fridays are flexible days. The school provides limited take-home work in the form of projects or work that addresses gaps in learning.
Hammond said the school ties academic standards to biblical discipleship and keeps time free for family life, describing it as a different route to the same expectations families already have.
Why it matters: It adds a K-6 option in The Woodlands that moves two weekdays of school online.

🌳 Woodlands Trivia
Construction on The Woodlands Waterway began in 1999 and the canal didn't open until 2004. What is now the community's main dining and entertainment corridor started as an engineering solution to stormwater management, and the aesthetic came later.
