Lone Star College System Building Bridges to Credentials and Careers grant

A $4.9M Grant Gives Lone Star College Students a Guide at Every Step

Houston Endowment has awarded Lone Star College System a $4.9 million multi-year grant to fund Building Bridges to Credentials and Careers. The program aims to keep students on track from their dual credit years through college completion and transfer to a university.

It works by handing each student from one support person to the next. A dual credit academy mentor supports students during those years. Once they enroll, a campus advisor takes over, with help from a retention and gateway success director as students work through first-semester English and math. A transfer navigator picks up at the transfer-application milestone and supports the move to a four-year partner university.

Extra support will focus on students who may face more barriers to finishing, including Pell-eligible students, those who need more preparation in English or math, and adults returning to college after time in the workforce. Aldine and Klein ISDs, Sam Houston State University, Prairie View A&M University and University of Houston-Downtown are confirmed partners, and the program may expand depending on demand. The grant follows a $500,000 planning grant from Houston Endowment in fall 2025.

Why it matters: Lone Star College says many students leave before earning a credential, and this grant pays for the staff and technology meant to catch them before they do.

Interfaith Community Clinic 30 Years of Hope, Healing and Health

Interfaith Clinic Has Served Uninsured Neighbors for 30 Years

Interfaith Community Clinic has spent 30 years providing medical care to Montgomery County residents regardless of their ability to pay. The nonprofit now provides nearly 6,000 patient visits a year, and it will mark the anniversary with a reception on Monday, Nov. 16, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Amerigo's Grille in The Woodlands.

The clinic began as South County Community Clinic, founded by Dr. Joel Kerschenbaum in 1996. Its services now include medical and dental care, behavioral health counseling, preventive screenings and help managing chronic conditions. About 90% of its services are performed by licensed volunteers. The main clinic is in Oak Ridge North, with a satellite location in Cut and Shoot.

Reception tickets start at $100, and proceeds support the clinic's continued services for uninsured residents. Amerigo's Grille is underwriting the evening.

Why it matters: A clinic that runs mostly on licensed volunteers has kept uninsured neighbors in care for three decades, and this reception helps pay for what comes next.

Ariat planned for The Woodlands Mall

Ariat Is Coming to The Woodlands Mall in Summer 2027

Western wear retailer Ariat is planning a location at The Woodlands Mall, with an opening expected in summer 2027, according to a filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.

The filing projects $1.1 million in renovations, expected to be complete on June 26. Ariat describes itself as an outdoor clothing retailer specializing in boots and western wear. Community Impact reported the story from the filing and says it will update it when more information is available.

Why it matters: This comes from a state filing, not an announcement from Ariat, so treat the summer 2027 date as a plan until the company confirms it.
