Good morning, The Woodlands.
Up to $8,000 in scholarships for graduating seniors, and about 70 young people now getting tutored through The Champion Project. Two different stories with the same thing underneath: neighbors putting real time and money behind kids. As parents, that one lands close to home for us. On the lighter side, the Grand Trolley Reveal on Saturday morning is the event we have marked on our calendar.
Glad you’re here,

Woodlands Arts Council Scholarships Offer Seniors Up to $8,000
The Woodlands Arts Council is opening its Student Art Scholarship program on November 5, and graduating high school seniors can earn up to $8,000 in college scholarships. The council has $40,000 in awards planned for 2027.
From November 5 through January 5, 2027, eligible students can submit a portfolio of at least three original works. The categories are 2D art, 3D art, and literary art, which covers short fiction, short nonfiction and poetry at 500 words or less. Students can enter both visual and literary arts, must live in one of the eligible Montgomery County and Woodlands ZIP codes, and must be free for the invite-only portfolio interviews on January 15 or 16.
Awarded portfolios will appear in the council's Student Arts Scholarship Anthology Volume 4, which will be sold at The Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival. “Student Art Scholarships are foundational to The Woodlands Arts Council’s impact,” said executive director and CEO Jenny Carattini-Wright. Woodlands Online says a registration link will be posted when submissions open.
Why it matters: Seniors who write or draw have a dedicated shot at college money, and the window stays open for two months.

The Champion Project Now Tutors About 70 Youth, Up From About 50
The Champion Project, a trauma-informed group mentoring program for youth in 24-hour staffed group homes across Greater Houston, welcomed almost 100 guests to its Night of Champions at Blue Magnolia on October 20. The program reports growth since April: mentoring programs went from 9 to 11, and church partners from 5 to 6.
Tutoring grew from about 50 youth in 4 schools to roughly 70 youth across 15 schools and homes. Assessments of 60 youth found the average 7th-grade participant performs at a 3rd-grade level in math and reading. In a recent summer pilot, students who received two hours of weekly tutoring over eight weeks gained an average of one full grade level in both subjects.
“Behind every one of those numbers is a child,” said co-founder Elizabeth Chappell. The group's annual gala, Love Big 2027, is April 1, 2027, and sponsorships are nearly sold out. Mentors and tutors can find out more at TheChampionProject.org.
Why it matters: A summer pilot showed two hours of tutoring a week can move a student up a full grade level, which puts a number on what a volunteer's time can do.

In May 1985, before Lake Woodlands was filled, The Woodlands held the Last Annual Bottom of the Lake festival. Activities included a skydiving exhibition, tug of war and mud sculpting.
