The intersection of The Woodlands Parkway and Grogan's Mill Road now carries a 50-foot-diameter steel sculpture called "First Fifty," set in the median between the eastbound and westbound lanes and visible from both above and below the roadway. It weighs 25 tons. The location was not incidental. That corner marks the site of the first concrete pour for The Woodlands in the early 1970s.

Eight metallic trees stand inside the piece, one for each of the township's eight residential villages, with branches that echo the forest around them. The circular form doubles as a clock face, a reference to the passage of time. Jonathan McMillian, president and founder of the Woodlands-based firm Landology, said four ideas shaped the design: people, belonging, time, and the native forest.

The sculpture sits inside an eight-acre landscape refresh. More than 400 new trees went in, along with plants, shrubs, planters and stone work, and existing trees were preserved, including three planted by George Mitchell. The Woodlands Road Utility District No. 1 funded the landscape portion. Chair Nelda Luce Blair, who studied the intersection with other RUD members before the project started, said she was appalled by the erosion, the lack of planting and the fading infrastructure she had been driving past every day without noticing.

The Woodlands Township, Howard Hughes and the Town Center Owner's Association funded the sculpture itself. Landology Assistant Project Manager Patricia Uribe, who said the historical weight of the site is what triggered the idea for a sculpture in the first place, expects the full project to be finished within the next month or so. Still to come: lighting under The Woodlands Parkway overpass, and a revamped plaque honoring Plato Pappas, the first civil engineer hired to build The Woodlands.

Blair says she cannot drive through the area enough now. It is the first thing a lot of people see, she said, and it needs to be as beautiful as the rest of The Woodlands.

Why it matters: The corner where the first concrete went down is finally being treated like the gateway it always was.

The Woodlands Country Club is planning $2.8 million in renovations to its two-story clubhouse, according to a filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. Work is set to begin September 1.

The job covers the interior of the clubhouse's main level, roughly 12,500 square feet, with the filing putting the finish date at February 5. Everything known so far comes from that filing and nothing else, which is a short leash on a project this size.

Why it matters: A renovation filing is the earliest public signal that a place is planning to stay, and this one runs into February.

The Woodlands Fire Department dispatched Engine 105 to Pagehurst Court in the Village of Indian Springs around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, after a caller reported baby ducks stuck in a storm drain.

The crew arrived to find the mother duck standing guard over her brood while the ducklings struggled to get out. Firefighters carefully moved her away from the drain, lifted the ducklings free, and carried them to a nearby drainage canal, where the family was put back together.

Why it matters: Not every call that goes out on an engine ends the way this one did.

The Magnolia/1488 West area led the Houston Association of Realtors' Hottest Communities report for the second quarter of 2026, with home sales up 61.6 percent against the same period in 2025. Nothing else on the list grew faster.

Conroe Southwest also made the top ten, with a 38 percent gain, putting two Montgomery County areas on a list that covers all of Greater Houston. The Huffman area, east of Atascocita, landed second at 58.2 percent.

New home construction was a significant factor behind the growth across many of the top ten, according to the report, and six of the ten carried an average home price below the Houston-area average of $455,159. HAR Chair Theresa Hill said the communities seeing the most growth are the ones where buyers have choices, and that new construction is widening those options.

Why it matters: Two of the ten fastest-growing communities in Greater Houston this quarter are in our county, and one of them is at the top of the list.
