The annual Sales Tax Holiday from the Office of the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts runs this year from Friday, August 7 through midnight on Sunday, August 9. Most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced under $100 come through tax free, whether you buy them at a Texas store or from an online or catalog seller doing business in Texas. In most cases you do not need to hand the seller an exemption certificate to get the break.

Here is what that is actually worth to us. The sales tax rate in The Woodlands totals 8.25 percent, which breaks down into 6.25 percent state tax, one percent for The Woodlands Township, and one percent for The Woodlands Township Economic Development Zone. That works out to just over eight cents saved on every dollar, or eight dollars on every hundred.

The trap is shipping. Delivery, shipping, handling and transportation charges from the seller count as part of the item’s sales price, and the under-$100 threshold applies to that total. Buy a $95 pair of jeans with a $10 delivery charge and the price lands at $105, which means tax is owed on the entire $105, not just the overage. If a delivery charge is billed per item on an invoice holding both exempt and taxable goods, only the qualifying item’s delivery charge is exempt. If it is a flat rate per package regardless of how many items are inside, the whole charge can be attributed to any one item.

Timing counts from when you pay, not when the box lands. Enter your card on Sunday, August 9 at 5:00 p.m. for qualifying school supplies and the purchase holds even if it does not ship until August 14 and arrives August 18. But if that card gets declined at 11:00 p.m. on the ninth and you do not resubmit until Monday the tenth, it is taxable. If you do get charged sales tax on a qualifying item during the holiday, ask the seller for a refund. They can either grant it or hand you Form 00-985, Assignment to Right to Refund, which lets you file the claim with the Comptroller’s office directly.

Why it matters: Eight percent back on a full back-to-school cart is real money in a house with more than one kid, and the rules that void it are the ones nobody reads.

The Players Theatre Company will mark its 60th anniversary across the 2026-27 season, under the theme “Legacy and Revelations.” It started life as the Little Theatre of Conroe, staging most of its early productions at the Hunt Plumbing Supply Building before expanding to the Crighton Theatre, where plays and musicals ran from 1979 to 2008. It operates today out of the Owen Theatre in downtown Conroe.

Managing director Cindy Siple credits the last decade of growth to the greater Conroe community. “Live theater has a unique ability to bring people together,” Siple said. “Every production creates opportunities for learning, empathy, collaboration, and joy. Our success over the past 60 seasons belongs to every volunteer, donor, sponsor, artist and audience member who has been part of this remarkable journey.”

One of the newer pieces of that work is The Penguin Project, an initiative the company began for the 2026 season. A news release describes it as giving young artists with developmental disabilities the chance to take part in a fully realized theatrical production alongside peer mentors.

On July 21 the Conroe City Council designated the day as The Players Theatre Company Day in recognition of what the company has given the city. The 60th season opens August 14 with the 1961 musical “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.”

Why it matters: Sixty years of a volunteer theater is not a milestone the town handed them, it is one they built one production at a time.

Everything But Water closed at Market Street as of July 25, confirmed by John Pearson, marketing director at Market Street. The store sat at 9595 Six Pines Drive.

It carried swimwear including bikinis and one-piece suits, along with cover-ups and resort wear, and stocked accessories such as bags, hats and footwear.

Why it matters: Market Street has turned over several storefronts this summer, and the pattern is worth watching.

Five local chapters of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution gathered at the Montgomery County Veterans Memorial Park in Conroe to unveil a new America 250 Patriot marker, erected in honor of Revolutionary War patriots and the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

The Spring Creek, Margaret Montgomery, Mary Vaughan Corner, Coushatti Trace and Heritage Trails chapters co-sponsored it together. Each one secured a $500 America 250 marker grant from the national society and then raised matching funds on top of that to pay for the marker’s permanent base.

State Representative Will Metcalf brought an official proclamation for the occasion, and a community reception followed. Texas DAR State Officers Dr. Jan Garrison and Anthony Startz attended, along with National Vice Chair America 250 Martha Hirsch. The chapters also recognized the late Judge Jimmie C. Edwards, along with Elizabeth Woods and Thomas Turner of the Veterans Memorial Park, and the Freedom Chapter Sons of the American Revolution Color Guard.

Why it matters: Five separate chapters each chased down a grant and matched it to put one marker in one park, which is how most things around here actually get built.
