U.S. News & World Report published its 2026-2027 Best Hospitals results this week, the annual look at how well adult hospitals across the country handle 37 different types of care. St. Luke’s Health - The Woodlands Hospital came out of it ranked No. 10 in Houston and No. 21 in Texas.

The local hospital was also rated High Performing in nine separate procedures and conditions: abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, kidney failure, COPD, heart arrhythmia, heart failure, hip fracture, pneumonia, stroke and TAVR. St. Luke’s Health - Lakeside Hospital was recognized for back surgery, specifically spinal fusion.

Augusto “Gus” Sepulveda, MD, chief medical officer for the Houston market of CommonSpirit Health, put the recognition on the physicians, nurses and staff who show up for patient care every day. Elsewhere in the system, Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center earned Best Hospital rankings and placed No. 3 in Houston and No. 5 in Texas overall, with a national ranking of No. 12 in ophthalmology.

The same rankings cycle brought news on the Memorial Hermann side. TIRR Memorial Hermann was named the No. 1 rehabilitation hospital in Houston, No. 1 in Texas and No. 4 in the nation, and this is the first year U.S. News has published city and state rankings for rehabilitation hospitals at all.

One detail is worth reading carefully. For these rankings, Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Medical Center is not scored on its own. It is counted jointly with Memorial Hermann Greater Heights, Southwest and Southeast as a four-hospital group, and that group placed No. 2 in Houston and No. 6 in Texas among rehabilitation facilities.

Why it matters: most people pick a hospital by which one is closest, and it is worth knowing that the closest one here is rated High Performing in nine of the things it is most likely to treat you for.

The Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Leadership Development Academy is a 12-month program run on campus to mentor local health care professionals and nurse leaders and prepare them for bigger roles. Every class picks a project. This one picked New Danville.

New Danville is a local nonprofit that gives adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities a place to live purposeful lives, built around independence and growth. The class collected donations and classroom supplies for the day program, then came out to New Danville for a breakfast to mark the end of the drive, spent time with the Wranglers and Mavericks, and toured the classrooms their donations will help stock.

Mike Painter, president and CEO of New Danville, said Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Medical Center has been part of New Danville’s story from the very beginning.

Why it matters: a leadership program could have picked any project, and this class chose to spend it on neighbors most people never meet.

Lone Star College-Montgomery is opening its doors on two Saturdays this month for anyone trying to get signed up for fall classes. Avoid the Stampede Registration Saturdays run August 15 and August 22, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., in the LSC-Montgomery Student Center.

Nobody has to wait for a Saturday. Registration help is available Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Walk-ins are welcome, and the college asks people to arrive at least 30 minutes before closing.

Juan Lebron, vice president of student success at LSC-Montgomery, said starting college is a big step and the point of the Saturdays is having someone answer questions in person and in real time. The college also pitches the days as a chance for anyone considering LSC-Montgomery to walk the campus and see what is there, from honors programs to workforce training.

Why it matters: the hardest part of going back to school is often the paperwork, and this is two Saturdays of someone sitting next to you while you do it.
