Black Walnut on New Trails has reopened after closing in July to redo its dining areas. New lighting, new flooring, and a neutral palette that brightens the whole room. The tin ceiling in the largest dining area is gone, replaced with bright white. The bar is structurally the same, with fresh white paint and the homemade gelato and dessert area still tucked in beside it.

What did not change is how you eat there. You order at the counter, then pick your spot: a booth, the front dining area, or the central one. Each dining room carries a single television screen, which means you can sit near it or well away from it, depending on the kind of night you are having. Total seating capacity is 347.

The three private dining rooms are each named for somebody. The Kennedy, named after a loyal guest, holds 60. The Estella, named after the restaurant's longest tenured partner, holds 30. The Leah, named after the owner's daughter, holds 30 as well. A portion of the covered outdoor patio can stretch that capacity for cocktail events.

The summer menu picked up a 12-ounce ribeye, a roasted Peri Peri chicken, and a wedge salad. Black Walnut is running Houston Restaurant Weeks through September 7, with a 25 dollar two-course lunch and a 39 dollar four-course dinner served from 4 p.m. to close. The Black Walnut Salad is available as a side on that menu.

Wednesday nights bring live music from 5:30 to 7:30. The restaurant opened in 2002 and moved across the street to its current New Trails address about ten years ago.

Why it matters: a place that has fed people here for more than twenty years just spent a month getting ready for the next twenty.

Interfaith of The Woodlands has opened nominations for its 2027 slate of Hometown Heroes, the honor it hands out each year at the Celebration of Excellence gala. The next gala lands in February.

The first Hometown Heroes were named in 1999, as part of The Woodlands 25th anniversary. In the years since, 178 individuals, businesses, and nonprofit organizations have carried the title.

Nominations are reviewed independently by a committee made up of people who have won it before. Selections will be announced in early November. The questions the nominating form asks are worth reading on their own: whether the person is a positive role model, whether they have a history of volunteering, whether they have given up personal gain to reach a worthwhile goal, and whether they bring positive recognition to the community.

Nominations close Friday, September 4 at 12:00 p.m. The form is on Interfaith's site.

Why it matters: this is one of the few local honors where the nominating is done by neighbors rather than a committee looking for candidates.

The Woodlands Township opens entries August 17 for the 38th Annual Wildflower Festival Art Contest, and the stakes are more concrete than most contests manage. The grand prize winner from the four children's categories gets their artwork printed on the official recycled tote bag handed out at the festival. The winning adult entry becomes the festival poster.

The brief is a nature scene with wildflowers in it. Heavy unlined white paper, canvas, or poster board, no larger than 11 by 17. Paint, watercolors, oils, pen and ink, pastels, crayons, colored pencils, or markers. No writing on the front, no photographs, one entry per person. Label the back with name, address, phone number, and age for children's entries.

Categories run up to four years, five to eight, nine to 13, 14 to 18, and adults 19 and over. First place in each of the four children's categories takes 100 dollars. The adult first place takes 500.

Entries go to the Township office at 2801 Technology Forest Boulevard starting August 17, open weekdays 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The deadline is Friday, September 18 at 5:30 p.m. The festival itself, hosted by The Woodlands Lions Club with the Township, runs Saturday, October 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Rob Fleming Park, and it is free.

Why it matters: somewhere in the area a nine-year-old is about to draw the bag a few thousand neighbors will carry home in October.

The Players Theatre Company starts its 60th season on August 14 with the Tony-winning musical comedy How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, at the historic Owen Theatre in downtown Conroe. The season is themed Legacy and Revelations.

The show follows J. Pierrepont Finch, who finds a self-help book that promises corporate success and climbs the ladder at the World Wide Wicket Company on the strength of its questionable advice. Melody Johnson directs and choreographs, with music direction by Ashlie Driver. Royce Reid plays Finch and Evann Sommers plays Rosemary Pilkington.

Performances run August 14 through 30, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. New this season, and part of the 60th season changes, are Saturday matinees at 2 p.m. After the second Sunday matinee the audience is invited to stay for a Talk Back with area business leaders.

The company traces back to 1967 as The Little Theatre of Conroe, performing on the Conroe High School stage and later in a refurbished plumbing supply store at Galveston and Robertson. It helped restore the Crighton Theatre in 1979 and produced there for nearly 30 years as The Crighton Players, then formed as The Players Theatre Company in 2008 in partnership with the City of Conroe and moved to the Owen.

Why it matters: sixty seasons of a volunteer stage in Conroe is the kind of thing that only happens if a few hundred people keep showing up for it.

George Mitchell set a goal of preserving at least twenty-eight percent of the native pine forest, and the community has held the line on it. That green space now takes in 151 parks, 220 miles of hike-and-bike trails, and seven championship golf courses.
