The Players Theatre Company opens its 60th season on August 14 at the historic Owen Theatre in downtown Conroe. The show is How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, the Tony Award-winning musical comedy, and it runs through August 30.

The company has been at this a while, and not always in a theatre. It began as The Little Theatre of Conroe, using the Conroe High School stage, and later worked out of a refurbished plumbing supply store at the corner of Galveston and Robertson Streets. After helping restore the Crighton Theatre in 1979, the group produced there for nearly 30 years as The Crighton Players. It became The Players Theatre Company in 2008, in partnership with the City of Conroe, and moved to the Owen.

The musical follows J. Pierrepont Finch, who finds a self-help book promising corporate success and talks his way up the executive ladder on charm and questionable advice. Melody Johnson directs and choreographs, with music direction by Ashlie Driver. Royce Reid plays Finch and Evann Sommers plays Rosemary Pilkington, backed by an ensemble playing the staff of the World Wide Wicket Company.

Performances run Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. New this season, the company has added Saturday 2 p.m. matinees. After the second Sunday matinee, audiences are invited to stay for a Talk Back with area business leaders. The season is themed Legacy and Revelations, and it carries eight productions.

Why it matters: a company that once rehearsed in a plumbing supply store is now the reason downtown Conroe has a season to look forward to.

The Tomball ISD Board of Trustees has been named one of five Texas Honor School Boards by the Texas Association of School Administrators, which recognizes school boards statewide for governance and service. The other four are Alice ISD, Boerne ISD, Denver City ISD and Lovejoy ISD.

All five are now finalists for the program's top honor, 2026 Outstanding School Board. They will be interviewed October 9 at the TASA and TASB convention in Houston, where one board is named that afternoon.

This is the second time in five years Tomball ISD has earned the distinction, after 2021. The selection committee pointed to the board's Exceeding Excellence 2030 strategic plan, a revised curriculum management system, its approach to integrating artificial intelligence, the expansion of the district's two-way dual-language program, and its educator pipeline and mentoring work.

Seven board members serve: Mark Lewandowski as president, John E. McStravick as vice president, Dr. Michael J. Pratt as secretary, Amanda Bass as assistant secretary, and trustees Patrick Beecher, Coco White and Jennifer Kratky. Superintendent Dr. Martha Salazar-Zamora is the nominating superintendent. The district covers 83 square miles across northwest Harris and southwest Montgomery counties and educates more than 23,300 students across 26 campuses.

Why it matters: school board work is unglamorous and mostly invisible, which is exactly why an outside panel noticing it is worth a minute.

The Woodlands Kiwanis Club is taking registrations for its annual Kids Fishing Tournament, set for Saturday, September 5 at Creekwood Park, 3883 S. Panther Creek Drive. It runs 7:30 a.m. to noon and it is free.

Check-in opens at 7:30 and fishing starts at 8:00. Bait is provided, but families bring their own rods, reels and tackle. Volunteers, including local Key Club members, will be on hand to help.

The morning also carries music, free refreshments, chips and hot dogs, and closes with an awards ceremony. It is open to ages 2 through 16, and registration is through the club's signup page.

Why it matters: a free morning outdoors where the only equipment a family has to find is a rod.

City Place will hold the first City Place School of Fly on Saturday, September 12, a free one-day event built around the fundamentals of fly fishing and the community's 150-acre Nature Preserve.

Instructors from the Orvis store in The Woodlands will run concurrent one-hour casting clinics and fly-tying workshops through the day. All equipment is provided. Clinics require advance registration because capacity is limited, and clinic participants have chances to win Orvis gear.

Everyone else can come without registering. Visitors are welcome to watch demonstrations, meet the instructors, and take in nature-themed children's activities. The Nature Preserve connects directly to the Spring Creek Greenway, one of the longest connected urban forested trail systems in the country, with trails for hiking, biking and wildlife watching.

Check-in is at City Place Plaza, 1250 Lake Plaza Drive, and the event itself is at the Nature Preserve at 24000 Holzwarth Road. Andrew Giammalva, vice president of Coventry Development Corporation of Houston, said the event reflects a push to activate the community's parks and natural spaces.

Why it matters: fly fishing usually asks for gear and a river before it asks anything else, and this one asks for neither.
