Michael Kerry Brown and Sally Pennington Moore have spent years working in molten glass. So has their son, Patrick Kerry Brown. This month The Woodlands Arts Council put all three of them in the same room, and the result is an exhibition about what happens when a family shares a craft without sharing a style.

The work splits three ways. Michael Kerry Brown pushes molten glass toward sculptural form. Sally Pennington Moore works the seam between science and art. Patrick Kerry Brown builds around themes of mental health and music, and treats glassmaking as both a grounding practice and a way to say something. Curator Annette Palmer describes the collection as a household working in harmony while each artist keeps a voice you can hear clearly.

Outside their own studios, the family teaches at Glassblowing Houston in Tomball, where they work with people at every level of experience.

Heart of Glass opened August 11 and runs through October 8 at the Arts Council exhibition space on Grogans Mill Road. Hours are Tuesday through Thursday, 1 to 4 p.m. Admission is free. There is an opening reception on Thursday, September 17, from 6 to 8 p.m., and the Arts Council encourages an RSVP.

Why it matters: a free gallery on a Tuesday afternoon is one of the easier things this town gives you, and this one happens to be a family talking to each other in glass.

A small group of local car lovers started The Woodlands Car Club in March 2001. Twenty-five years on, the club says it has put more than $175,000 into over 100 nonprofit organizations across Montgomery County.

The anniversary gets a season rather than a party. Three gatherings this fall will bring together founding members, community partners and the charities the club has backed. The first is a private tour of the Gullo Family Classic Car Museum in Magnolia, built around the Gullo family's own collection, with attendees invited to contribute to the Gullo Christmas for Kids Charitable Foundation.

"Looking back at the early days, our goal was to create a place where people could enjoy their passion for cars while giving something meaningful to the community," said Dana Pritchard, club president and one of the founding members.

The season closes Sunday, December 6, at The Woodlands Cars & Coffee for a Cause, the event the club started in March 2009 and describes as the first of its kind in the area. That morning brings the year's charitable check presentations and the annual toy drive. It is free and open to anyone who wants to come.

Why it matters: a hobby that has quietly moved six figures into local nonprofits is not really a hobby anymore.

Love Fosters Hope will hold its 15th annual Run for Hope on Saturday, October 3, starting at 7 a.m. on The Woodlands Waterway.

There are three ways in. The one-mile fun run costs $15 to $30 depending on age and can be walked. The timed 5K is $40 and the timed 10K is $50, both with medals for the overall winners and for male and female age group winners. Breakfast is part of it, and there is face painting and a bounce house for the kids who are not running.

The money goes back into the organization's work with children and teens in foster care: summer camps, year-round mentorship, visits to residential treatment facilities, and a transitional home for teens who have aged out of care and would otherwise have nowhere to go.

Why it matters: October 3 is a Saturday morning you were probably going to spend on the Waterway anyway.

Registration for The Woodlands Township Parks and Recreation Department's fall 2026 programs opened Monday, August 10. The Fall 2026 Activity Guide is online now.

The list runs wide: concerts and family events, sports, aquatics, outdoor adventures, enrichment classes, tennis, pickleball and holiday programming. Named on the schedule are Concert in the Park, Family Bingo Night, Winter Makers Market, Creekside Campout, Halloween events, Sunny Dayz Holiday Break Camps, and activities at Texas TreeVentures and The Woodlands Boat House.

Registration is first come, first served, and the Township says many programs have limited space and fill quickly. Why it matters: the fall calendar for a lot of families here gets set this week, whether anybody meant to set it or not.
