Tomball ISD cut the ribbon Tuesday on a new fifth-grade addition at Creekside Park, and the building did more than add square footage. The former Creekside Park Junior High is now simply Creekside Park, the district's first and only campus serving grades 5 through 8. Beginning this school year, fifth graders walk in the same doors as eighth graders.

The reasoning the district gives is continuity. The 5-8 model is built to smooth the handoff between intermediate and junior high, the stretch where kids normally change buildings, change teachers and start over socially. Superintendent Dr. Martha Salazar-Zamora described the campus as a one-of-a-kind learning experience meant to carry students through to high school, and said the addition represents new opportunities rather than just new space.

Principal Tara Bailey stays on to lead the campus into it. She said the building is something everyone is proud of, but what she is more excited about are the people who will fill it every day: the staff, the students walking in ready to learn, and the families trusting the school with their children.

The wing came out of the 2021 Bond Program, which Tomball ISD voters approved to handle enrollment growth and improve learning environments across the district. Board President Mark Lewandowski tied the day directly back to that vote, calling the addition a direct result of the community investing in public education. The project was run by the district's Facilities and Construction team with LAN, Huckabee, GTT General Contractors, School Specialty and G&L Installation.

Why it matters: For families here, the four-year stretch that usually means two buildings and two rounds of starting over now happens under one roof.

The Woodlands Arts Council has opened artist applications for the 2027 Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival, the April weekend along the Waterway where thousands of people come to see the work of 200 juried fine artists alongside live performances, local food and wine.

The rankings behind it are not modest. Woodlands Online readers have voted it the number one event in The Woodlands fifteen years running. USA Today's 2025 Readers' Choice placed it fourth among art festivals in the country, and Art Fair Sourcebook ranks it sixth in art sales.

Artists apply online with images of their work and their booth, and may file up to two applications if they work across separate categories. Everything has to be original and made by the artist applying. A jury scores entries on November 7 across twelve categories, from ceramics and fiber to jewelry, photography and wood, and the top scorers get the invitation. Applications close October 12, with notifications going out November 23.

Prior participation guarantees nothing. On the Saturday of the festival, judges walk the venue to choose six Best of Show artists and the 2028 Featured Artist, who receives a double booth, a three-night stay at the Waterway Marriott, and their work on all of the following year's promotional material. The festival is organized by The Woodlands Arts Council with a board, an advisory committee and more than 500 community volunteers.

Why it matters: The artists you will walk past on the Waterway next April are being chosen right now, and the window shuts in October.

The Genealogy and Preservation Center is turning 50, and Montgomery County is making it official. County Judge Mark Keough and the County Commissioners issued a proclamation declaring Wednesday, August 19, 2026 as Genealogy and Preservation Center Day.

The Center is marking it with an open house from 1 to 3 p.m. that afternoon. There will be tours, cake and coffee, a walk through the Center's own history, and a chance to meet the team and find out how to start tracing your family. It sits on the second floor of the Central Library in Conroe at 104 I-45 N.

The proclamation encourages people to come see the place, use its specialized services, and recognize what it has done for local history over five decades. Library Director Dr. Janna Hoglund joined the Genealogy team and the commissioners for the presentation.

Why it matters: Fifty years of somebody carefully keeping Montgomery County's records is the reason anyone here can find their great-grandparents at all.

The Woodlands Township Board of Directors is holding budget workshops five mornings running, Monday, August 17 through Friday, August 21. Each session begins at 8:30 a.m. at the Township offices at 2801 Technology Forest Boulevard.

These are posted public meetings. State law requires notice at least 72 hours ahead, and the Township posts it inside its boundaries, at the office building and on its website, where the agendas go up as well.

Why it matters: These five mornings are where next year's Township budget gets worked out, and the room is open.
