Good morning, Woodlands.
The tiles at The Way Home go in twice a year. Once before Memorial Day, once before Veterans Day.
That is the whole schedule.
Which means October 5 is not a suggestion, and a name that misses it waits until spring.
Glad you're here.

I'm 63 With $1.5M. Can I Spend $10K a Month?
You’ve saved $1.5 million. Now comes the real test.
Can it produce $10,000 a month, or will that pace drain your portfolio?
Most retirees do not get a clear answer until it is too late.
The issue is not just how much you have. It is whether your portfolio was built to pay you, not just grow.
That difference can determine whether your money lasts decades or starts breaking down early.
Sequence of returns, taxes on withdrawals, healthcare costs, and whether the 4% rule still applies all play a role.
Fiduciary advisors created a breakdown showing what drives sustainable income and why the same $1.5M can produce very different outcomes.
If you have $1M or more invested, do not guess.

Two Woodlands Soldiers, 700 Tiles, and an October 5 Deadline

The Woodlands Township is taking orders for engraved granite tiles on the Walk of Honor at The Way Home Veterans Memorial Monument, and orders for the Veterans Day installation close October 5.
The monument stands in Town Green Park at 2099 Lake Robbins Drive, along the east edge of the Great Lawn beneath the backdrop of The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. Its centerpiece is a sculpture by local sculptor Edd Hayes, with life-size figures representing two young Woodlands-area residents who gave their lives in service: Army PFC Cory C. Kosters, who died in Iraq on March 5, 2007, and Army CPL Zach R. Endsley, who died in Afghanistan in July 2008.
The monument and its Walk of Honor were dedicated on Memorial Day, May 25, 2015. More than 700 black granite tiles have been placed since, each one recognizing someone who served. Each tile becomes a permanent part of “The Way Home” Veterans Memorial Monument.
A tile costs $300, with the engraving and installation included. Tiles are inscribed and installed twice each year, prior to Memorial Day and prior to Veterans Day, and Memorial Day orders close April 15. The memorial honors active-duty service members and veterans, living or deceased, from every branch of the U.S. military and all conflicts.
Why it matters: the tiles only go in twice a year, so a name that misses October waits until Memorial Day.

Oak Ridge North Set an August 24 Hearing on a Higher Tax Rate

Oak Ridge North will hold a public hearing on its fiscal year 2026-27 tax rate on August 24 at 6 p.m. at City Hall, 27424 Robinson Road, following a decision at the August 10 council meeting. The rate will be an increase from the current $0.4268 per $100 valuation.
City Manager Heather Neeley recommended a total rate of $0.4615, but advised council to advertise a higher proposed rate of $0.5327, because a proposed rate can be lowered at the hearing and can never be raised above what was advertised. "Once we set the proposed rate, we can always go down," she said.
At the recommended rate, city documents put the increase at about $34.70 a year per $100,000 of taxable home value, and about $78.95 a year for the median homestead valued at $230,176. The no-new-revenue rate would be $0.2927 and the voter-approval rate $0.3962. The recommended rate is a $0.3250 maintenance and operations rate plus a $0.1365 debt service rate.
Officials pointed to two things likely to lower revenue: appraisal protests and adjustments to certified taxable values, and House Bill 9, which raised the business personal property exemption from $2,500 to $125,000.
Why it matters: the rate a city advertises and the rate it intends to adopt are not always the same number, and the hearing is where that gets settled.

Their Own Child's Reading Turned Into a 15-Year Business

Kumon Math and Reading Center of The Woodlands West will mark 15 years on October 17. It runs a year-round after-school program in math and reading for students age 3 and older, who attend twice a week and complete homework daily.
Owners Luis Contreras and Birgit Hess came out of the hospitality industry. They said they became involved after seeing their own child face challenges with reading, and went on to become Kumon instructors themselves.
The center now has capacity for about 600 students and about 440 currently enrolled. Hess said it grew after COVID-19 emerged, when many students needed additional academic support. Students can also complete homework on a tablet through Kumon Connect.
Why it matters: what pulled these two out of one industry and into another was their own kid, and the roll is now about 440 students.

The Woodlands Mall Got Urban Outfitters' Newest Store Format

The Urban Outfitters that opened at The Woodlands Mall on Saturday, August 15 is the seventh store anywhere to carry the chain's latest retail concept, which debuted in Houston in September 2025.
The 5,604-square-foot space uses modular fixtures that can be adapted to trends, seasonal shifts and customer demand, along with brighter and more spacious fitting rooms and dedicated shops within the store for lounge, denim, beauty and accessories.
The opening lands alongside the brand's back-to-school campaign. UO Rewards members get a gift with purchase, with no minimum spend.
Why it matters: the mall is one of only seven places carrying this version of the store.

🌳 Woodlands Trivia
In January 1933 a well outside Conroe blew in as a gusher, immediately caught fire, and then cratered. Killing it took the inventor of the portable drilling rig and the man now called the father of directional drilling, and the methods they worked out here went on to be used everywhere.
