Sarah Kelly Music School started the way a lot of things here start, in a house. In 2010 Sarah Kelly-Ekman and her husband Jonas began teaching lessons out of their home. Sixteen years later the school runs out of a Market Street studio it moved into in 2016, coaching around 370 students with 10 coaches and 15 interns, and it has added a Fulshear location for lessons once a week.

What sets it apart is what happens after the lesson. Kelly-Ekman, a Grammy-nominated touring artist, describes the school as something more than a place to learn scales. Her words: they are releasing music, promoting music, and helping students write their own songs, not just teaching them to sing and play. Jonas Ekman runs studio production, with an in-house producer working alongside students to cut demos so they get used to hearing their own voice through a microphone instead of inside their head.

This year that turned into plane tickets. A group of 10 students went from Texas to Los Angeles to record original music at EastWest Studios under producer Mike Clink, whose credits include Guns N' Roses, Mötley Crüe, Megadeth and Eddie Money. Another group made two consecutive trips to Nashville. Kelly-Ekman says the school has 38 new songs coming out of those sessions, written by students here.

She is direct about why she does it. She has said songwriting was the place she ran to through her own highest highs and lowest lows, and that she treats helping other people write as close to an obligation. Locally, the payoff is easier to spot: Live on the Lawn shows featuring the school's students run every Friday at 6:30 p.m. on Market Street.

Why it matters: the kid singing on Market Street on a Friday night may have cut a record in Los Angeles two months ago, and most people walking past have no idea.

Construction is underway on Broadstone Gosling Oaks, a 388-unit Class A apartment community on 14.64 acres at the southeast corner of Gosling Road and West Rayford Road. Alliance Residential is developing it, having bought the multifamily parcel from Newman Commercial Real Estate earlier this year. First residences are expected to open in December 2026.

The apartments are the first residential piece of Gosling Oaks, a 50-plus-acre mixed-use development Newman describes as sitting at the southern gateway to The Woodlands. Plans put the 388 residences next to more than 100,000 square feet of retail, restaurant and office space, arranged around connected greenspaces and relocated heritage live oaks. Newman has already put in the drainage, the new entry drive and a dedicated turn lane on Gosling Road, and continues to work on a five-building commercial core plus additional pad sites.

The timing says something about the market. Colliers counted 7,008 units of net absorption across Houston in the second quarter of 2026, 15.5% above the five-year second-quarter average, while units under construction fell 29.3% from a year earlier. Cushman & Wakefield put stabilized vacancy in The Woodlands at 7.7% that quarter against 11.1% for Houston overall.

Why it matters: more people are renting here than the pipeline is building for, and this is one of the few projects answering that at the Rayford end of town.

The Woodlands Children's Museum is joining Gabby's Dollhouse MEOWseum Discovery Days from Friday, September 11 through Saturday, September 19, in partnership with DreamWorks Animation and the Association of Children's Museums. It runs Tuesday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and it is included in regular admission, which is $10 for adults and for children one year and older.

Families get a photo setup with a Gabby's Dollhouse backdrop and a life-size Gabby standee, plus themed art projects and a scavenger hunt available every day of the run. On Friday, September 11 at 11 a.m. there is a storytime reading of "DreamWorks Gabby's Dollhouse: The Cupcake Tree," adapted by Gabhi Martins.

One detail worth reading before you promise anything at breakfast: the museum states plainly that there is no Gabby character appearance.

Interim Executive Director Jennifer Kraus tied the partnership to what the museum already does, saying the show encourages children to be curious, creative, to solve problems and work together, and that those are the same qualities the museum tries to nurture. The museum is at 4775 W. Panther Creek Drive, Suite 280, in the Panther Creek Village Center, and it is closed Sundays and Mondays.

Why it matters: this is the kind of thing that sells out a Saturday, and knowing about it three weeks early is the whole advantage.

Newcor has closed three leases at 25903 Elmfield Drive, the mixed-use property in the Creekside and Augusta Pines area. The newest is Tee Box, a golf simulator and entertainment concept that celebrates its grand opening on Saturday, August 29. Newcor describes it as the first concept of its kind in the immediate market.

Joining it is Make Art, an arts and crafts studio aimed at children and families. The third lease belongs to Happy Land, the indoor children's playground already open at the property, which we covered when it opened in early August.

Why it matters: one address is quietly turning into the place you take the kids on a Saturday when it is 101 degrees outside.
