Most of today's issue turned out to be some version of that, people putting something into this place on purpose. The one that stayed with us was the Township's series for parents, because showing up for somebody else's kids counts too.

Flying Biscuit Is Coming to FM 1488, and the Owners Live Here
The Flying Biscuit Café has signed a lease for its first Magnolia location, at 5667 FM 1488, Suite D, in Magnolia Village. It is scheduled to open in the fourth quarter of this year, on Magnolia's main commercial corridor alongside businesses already there.
What makes it worth knowing is the order the owners did things in. Mitchell and Heather Wagner picked the town before they picked a site. Both grew up in small Texas towns. They were married at The Meekermark, a few minutes from where the café is going, and they live in the community they are about to serve. They first ate at a Flying Biscuit on a trip to Charlotte and have been regulars since.
Mitchell Wagner is a U.S. Army veteran and a Texas State University graduate who spent 27 years leading sales and operations for two of the country's largest retailers, running businesses with more than $100 million in revenue and teams of more than 300 people. Heather Wagner joins him as co-owner.
They have said they plan to build the café around Magnolia's families, schools, youth sports teams, churches and community organizations, and around first responders, active military and fellow veterans. They also intend to join the Magnolia Chamber of Commerce. Magnolia is the first of two cafés they have committed to develop.
It will be Flying Biscuit's sixth café in Texas, joining locations in Cypress, East Downtown Houston, Kingwood, Memorial City and Richmond.
Why it matters: a franchise deal reads like paperwork until you find out the owners chose the town first and got married five minutes down the road from it.

A Free Series for Teens and Parents Starts Wednesday Night

The Woodlands Township is starting a free four-part series for teens and their parents on Wednesday, September 2, at the Kevin Brady Library, 2250 Buckthorne Place. Sessions run 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on the first Wednesday of each month through December. The Township's announcement says no registration is required and there is no charge to attend.
The series is called SMART, for Safe, Mindful, Aware, Resilient Teens. Wednesday's opening session is "Hidden Dangers: Prescription Drugs and Substance Awareness," with presenters from the Drug Enforcement Administration and Conroe ISD Police. They will cover current drug trends affecting teens, prescription medications, vaping myths and facts, warning signs, and where families can find help.
Three more sessions follow: "Social Media and Online Predators" on October 7, "Mental Health Matters" on November 4, and "Healthy Relationships: Red Flags and Boundaries" on December 2. Families can attend one or all four.
Why it matters: these are the conversations parents put off until something forces them, and the Township is handing you an hour, a room, and someone who knows the material.

Four Woodlands-Area Schools Are Tied Atop District 13-6A

Oak Ridge beat Conroe 11-8 in team tennis at Oak Ridge High School on Tuesday, August 25, and had to come from behind to do it. Conroe led 4-3 after doubles, taking two boys courts and two girls courts.
Then the singles turned it. Oak Ridge won eight of the twelve singles matches, sweeping the No. 3 through No. 6 positions on both the boys and girls sides. Conroe held the top two spots in each lineup.
The result leaves coach Quinto's War Eagles level with College Park, Grand Oaks and The Woodlands, all four at 3-0 in district play. Conroe, Willis, Caney Creek and Cleveland are all 0-3.
The logjam starts breaking Tuesday, September 1, when Grand Oaks visits The Woodlands in a match between two unbeaten teams. College Park travels to Caney Creek, Oak Ridge goes to Cleveland, and Conroe hosts Willis.
Why it matters: four schools from the same stretch of Montgomery County are sitting on the same record, and the first one falls Tuesday.

🌳 Woodlands Trivia
Tamina, just east of I-45 between The Woodlands and Conroe, was founded in 1871 by formerly enslaved people who had come to help build the railroad through Montgomery County. It is considered the oldest freedmen's town in Texas, and one of the few emancipation communities anywhere in the country that people still live in today. In 2025 the Texas Historical Commission dedicated a state marker at Tamina Park through its Undertold Stories program.
