Sophie Galindo runs Galindo Aesthetics off FM 1488 in Conroe, and her signature service is a buccal release: lymphatic massage, fascia release, and intraoral muscle work aimed at TMJ, jaw clenching, and the tension people carry in their faces without noticing.

She has one request before you arrive. Go easy on the caffeine, because most first-timers walk in too wound up to get anything out of it. That turns out to be the whole idea. She wants to know about your week, your workload and how you are sleeping before she gets anywhere near your jaw.

The rest of the menu runs to microchanneling, Korean lash lifts and brow lamination, and she will tell you how often to come back based on how much tension you are actually carrying rather than a standard schedule.

As of Friday, the Montgomery County Animal Shelter in Conroe was asking for help fostering up to 60 dogs after air conditioning went out in two of its rooms. The county was working on the repair, and the shelter said it critically needed fosters while that work got done.

It is calling the program a Heat Wave Foster, aimed squarely at people who have thought about fostering and never quite started. The commitment is temporary. Supplies are provided while they last. The shelter's team stays available throughout, and anyone who finds it going well is welcome to keep their foster longer.

The goal the shelter set is specific: 30 empty kennels, and 60 dogs out of the building. Its framing is that a few days in someone's home is what gets them there.

Conroe ISD has no single building where career and technical education happens. The coursework is spread across The Woodlands, College Park, Grand Oaks and Oak Ridge high schools, and district officials say the program keeps growing anyway.

CTE Director Tally Jo Stout said the district runs 26 specialized programs of study carrying more than 140 separate offerings. The four most popular clusters, according to Executive Director of Communications Andrew Stewart, are business, marketing and finance; health science; hospitality and tourism; and arts, audio-visual technology and communications. Health science is available at all four campuses.

The physical build-out continues. Renovations at the Oak Ridge Ninth-Grade Campus, adding welding bays, culinary stations and computer labs, are set to finish by January. Earlier work came out of the $653.5 million bond voters passed in 2019, including $13.4 million toward a three-story classroom wing at The Woodlands High School finished in August 2021, and the South County CTE Center completed in August 2023.

Some of it runs through partners. Lone Star College-Montgomery hosts a dual credit automotive course, taught by Michael LeBlanc, where students can earn an Automotive Service Technician Level 1 certificate. LeBlanc said demand for skilled technicians keeps growing while the industry faces a shortage of qualified workers.

Why it matters: these are the four campuses our neighbors' kids actually attend, and the welding bay opening in January is a real door.

The Woodlands Township is running a Fall Pickleball Tournament Series at the Falconwing Pickleball Courts, open to players 18 and older, with five dated events between September and December.

It opens at 9 a.m. Saturday, September 12, with Top of the Town, a Champions Court format built to sort out the Township's top individual players. After that: a Halloween Tournament October 9 at 6:30 p.m., Hats Off to Heroes on November 14 at 9 a.m. honoring military members, veterans, teachers, first responders and healthcare professionals, November to Remember on November 17 at 9 a.m. for players 55 and older, and the Ugly Sweater Holiday Tournament December 5 at 9 a.m.

Players can enter one or all of them. Registration is $20 per player for Woodlands residents and $25 for non-residents. Each tournament includes event photography and custom medals for top finishers. Why it matters: a $20 entry and a paddle is about the cheapest way left to meet fifty neighbors in an afternoon.

When Shenandoah incorporated in March 1974, the boundaries it claimed took in a good deal of The Woodlands, commercial center and all. Houston and Conroe pushed back hard. An out-of-court settlement around 1976 had Shenandoah de-annex the Woodlands land in exchange for everyone agreeing Shenandoah was in fact a city.

"That family didn't come to town two to a mule." Translation: they have money, and they have had it a while. The picture is folks so poor they had to double up on one animal to make the trip in.
