The John Cooper School has five seniors, Britt Williams-Bunts, Luke Milan, Polina Terentyeva, Helena Linsenmeier, and Rohan Kansal, named Semifinalists in the 2027 National Merit Scholarship Program. They are among more than 16,000 academically strong seniors nationwide picked in the competition's 72nd year, out of a pool competing for roughly 6,700 scholarships worth almost $24 million next spring.

Head of School Dr. Stephen Popp said in the school's announcement that the five embody Cooper's journey "From Curiosity to Wisdom," pointing to intellectual curiosity, dedication, and a willingness to challenge themselves as what set the group apart. Advancing past Semifinalist status means submitting further material for Finalist consideration, a process that runs into the scholarship announcements next spring.

Why it matters: five names on a national academic list are also five reminders of what a Woodlands classroom can produce, long before graduation caps ever come off.

The Woodlands Car Club is opening its 25th anniversary season with a tribute to The Woodlands Fire Department, honoring the antique fire engine that club members helped bring back to life at their very first charity car show back in 2003. The tribute runs alongside the Township's annual Boots vs. Badges softball game and the club's Community Car Showcase, Sunday, Sept. 27, 4 to 7 p.m. at McCullough Junior High School, free and open to the community.

Club president and founding member Dana Pritchard said seeing the antique engine again "brings everything full circle." Since forming in March 2001, the club has given more than $175,000 to over 100 nonprofits across Montgomery County, built on a mission its members call "Using Our Cars to Give Back to Our Community."

The anniversary season continues into the fall: a private tour of the Gullo Family Classic Car Museum in Magnolia on Sept. 26, a community celebration at Beck's Prime on Nov. 14, and the year-closing Cars and Coffee for a Cause on Dec. 6, which doubles as the club's annual toy drive.

Why it matters: a club that started as a handful of hobbyists twenty-five years ago has quietly become one of the county's steadier sources of nonprofit funding, one charity show at a time.

BJ Feuerhelm has stepped into the Athletic Director role at The John Cooper School after a decade coaching within the program, most recently as head coach of girls' basketball. It's his first year away from the sideline, a change he called "a big change" but one he's approaching as his "mountaintop."

Feuerhelm described this year as a "watch and learn" period as he settles in, while pushing his coaching staff to keep improving rather than repeat what worked last year. He's focused on keeping the program's identity intact as it adjusts to Class 4A competition after moving up from 3A in 2024, making sure coaches and athletes have what they need to compete at the higher level.

He pointed to signing day and the recognition given to less prominent sports like equestrian, fencing, and rowing as examples of what makes the program distinct, alongside the school's practice of coordinating closely between teachers and coaches so athletics never come before the classroom.

The Woodlands College Park High School crowned Spencer Howell and Emma Brown its 2026-27 homecoming king and queen during halftime of Friday's football game against C.E. King at Woodforest Bank Stadium, Sept. 11. The College Park Student Council hosted the ceremony, with the homecoming court escorted by parents between flags presented by the College Park Color Guard as the Reveliers lined the procession.

Howell plays bass clarinet in the College Park marching band, is involved in theater, and belongs to the Academy of Science. Brown serves as captain of the College Park Color Guard. Each student was introduced to the crowd along with their future plans before Principal Robert MacFarlane congratulated the pair and joined them and their families for photos.

Why it matters: a homecoming crown is a small thing in the scheme of a school year, but it's the kind of small thing a graduating class remembers longest.

De la Casa Pasta started as a fresh pasta manufacturer and grew into a full Italian market and bake shop at 22525 Hufsmith-Kohrville Road in Tomball. Owner Luisa Obando's wholesale operation now supplies roughly 160 restaurants across Austin, San Antonio and Dallas, but most drivers passing the storefront have no idea what is inside. Obando says people are consistently surprised once they walk through the door.

The pasta is made fresh daily on-site, with machines doing the work but Obando's team staying hands-on through every batch to protect the quality that keeps 160 restaurants ordering. A retail pasta bar out front carries about 25 different cuts, giving home cooks the same product professional kitchens use. Next to it sits the DCP Bake Shop, serving coffee, pastries and Italian sandwiches built on imported DOP cold cuts, the certification that guarantees the meat came from a specific Italian region made the traditional way. Obando is quick to clarify the shop is not a restaurant, it is a market and takeaway counter.

Customers come in with real questions, about where a product is from, which sauce fits which pasta cut, what wine to pour with dinner, and Obando's team treats that curiosity as part of the job, sourcing directly from Italian producers and importers to keep the shelves genuine. The business is preparing to open a second location and has built out full Thanksgiving and winter holiday menus for anyone who wants a finished Italian meal without the kitchen work.

Why it matters: a Tomball manufacturing operation feeding restaurants across three major Texas cities also built a storefront small enough to walk past and easy to underestimate.
