Vinny's Barber Shop is coming up on its tenth anniversary, and owner Vinny DeLeon says it has always been about more than haircuts. What began as a single shop now has locations in Spring, The Woodlands, and Ohio, with more planned around the Houston area in the coming months. The shop sponsors high school, elementary, and select teams in football, soccer, and baseball, and DeLeon says he wants Vinny's to be part of the family, not just the local barber.

The menu runs from regular cuts, fades, and kids cuts to straight edge shaves, military-style cuts, and modern and traditional styles. What sets the chair apart is the conversation before the clippers come out. The most common mistake DeLeon sees is a customer who doesn't really know what they want, so he asks about their lifestyle and how much time they actually have to style their hair, then gives a realistic picture of what their hair's texture and style can do.

With the ten-year mark approaching, DeLeon is putting together plans for a big celebration, one he wants the community to be part of as a way to give back to the families who have supported the shop.

Why it matters: a barber willing to tell you what your hair can realistically do, and a shop whose name is on local kids' jerseys, is the kind of business that earns a decade of regulars.

The Players Theatre Company is bringing back its Penguin Project after what it calls a remarkable first production last spring. The program gives young artists with special needs, ages 8 to 21, the chance to perform in a fully staged musical. Each artist is paired with a peer mentor of a similar age who offers one-on-one support through rehearsals and performances.

This time the show is Seussical Jr., and it will be performed on the Owen Theatre stage in Conroe next spring. Registration is open now for artists and peer mentors, and there is no cost to take part. Rehearsals start in October on Thursday evenings at the Owen, and adult volunteers are welcome in a variety of support roles.

Managing director Cindy Siple, a retired Montgomery ISD music teacher, is directing. "The special challenges of a disability don't limit a child's ability to dream, imagine, or shine," she said. Anyone interested can attend an information meeting on Thursday, October 1, at 4:30 p.m. at the Owen Theatre.

Why it matters: a spot in a real cast, with a peer at your side for every rehearsal, is exactly the kind of welcome a community theatre is built to offer.

Shoppers at the Grogan's Mill Village Center found The UPS Store there shuttered last week, and social media quickly filled with questions about whether it was gone for good and what would happen to mailboxes. Owner Nathan told Woodlands Online he is restructuring the location as an independent store and said he expected the doors to open again in a week.

Current mailbox renters can still reach their boxes in the meantime using the six-digit after-hours codes they already have, and Nathan said there should be no delays in mail delivery. Existing mail and office services will carry over, though UPS-specific orders and services, such as Amazon returns, may lag. He and Luke, a former employee who is now his partner, are working through lease negotiations as a new independent business.

For UPS-specific needs, Drake Smith, general manager of two other area locations, said both have mailboxes available and all services ready: 6700 Woodlands Parkway at the Sterling Ridge Village Center, and 4747 Research Forest at the Cochran's Crossing Village Center.

Why it matters: for anyone who just renewed a mailbox there, knowing the after-hours code still works is the news that counts.
