Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital ranked No. 4 out of 238 hospitals in the Complex Care Medical Centers group of Vizient's annual Bernard A. Birnbaum, MD, Quality Leadership rankings. The rankings work as a national scorecard focused on patient safety and quality.

Vizient looks at six areas: safety, mortality, effectiveness, efficiency, patient centeredness and variation of care. All eight Houston Methodist acute care hospitals were named top performers, and Houston Methodist Baytown Hospital and Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital each ranked No. 1 in their groups.

David Bernard, CEO of Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital, said being among the top five in its group nationally is an honor and a reflection of the work happening across the hospital every day. He credited the team of physicians, nurses, staff and volunteers.

Why it matters: It gives neighbors a national yardstick for the hospital that cares for them close to home.

Niche has named Tomball ISD the No. 1 Best School District in Harris County for the eighth year in a row in its 2027 Best Schools and Districts rankings. The district also ranks No. 5 among Texas districts and is the largest in that top five, serving more than 23,000 students.

Nationally, Tomball ISD comes in at No. 111 out of 10,449 districts, which puts it in the top 1%. It also took No. 1 in Harris County for District with the Best Teachers and Best Places to Teach, and No. 1 in the Houston area for Best School District and District with the Best Teachers.

Niche's rankings combine academic and school data, including information from the U.S. Department of Education, with reviews and input from students and parents. Superintendent Dr. Martha Salazar-Zamora credited students, teachers, staff, families, the community and the Board of Trustees.

Why it matters: The district reaches into southwest Montgomery County, so the ranking counts for neighbors here too.

Lessons On The Go connects families with a growing group of independent teachers who bring piano, guitar, drums and violin lessons into the home, with more instruments added as new teachers join. About 95 percent of instructors teach in the student's home.

Students range from four and five years old into their 70s and 80s. One adult student, a brain surgeon, signed up specifically to test whether lessons would sharpen memory and cognition. "Found some very pleasant results," says lesson coordinator Beth Colvin.

Lessons are sold in packs of four, not tied to a day, a week or a contract, so a family can use them four times a week, four times a month or four times a year. The price does not change when a student switches instruments, and instructors travel from as far as Huntsville down through Conroe and Willis, into Tomball and through Creekside.

Why it matters: For families with packed schedules and adults who wonder if it is too late to start, lessons at home with no contract remove two common obstacles.
