Good morning, The Woodlands.

Somewhere right now, Conroe city leaders are putting together a proposal headed for NASA. That's the October we're in.

It's the kind of Friday where a local HVAC company is settling jobs with a handshake and a Hollywood star is heading to a Woodlands bookshop next week. The institutions here are showing up.

Glad you’re here,

Jaclyn Smith Is Coming to The Woodlands to Sign Her New Memoir

Village Books in The Woodlands is hosting actress Jaclyn Smith on Thursday, October 8, for a book signing and photo opportunity from 6 to 8 p.m. Smith, a Houston native best known for her role as Kelly Garrett in Charlie's Angels, will be signing her recently published memoir, "I Once Knew a Guy Named Charlie."

The event is open to the public, but fans who want to go through the signing and photo line will need to purchase the book through Village Books. The shop recommends buying in advance at myvillagebooks.com to secure a spot.

"Our customers love the opportunity to meet authors and cultural icons in person," said Teresa Kenney, co-owner of Village Books. "Having someone as iconic as Jaclyn Smith here is a very special opportunity for our community." Village Books is located at 9955 Woodlands Parkway, Suite F.

Why it matters: a Houston original, in a Woodlands bookshop, for one night.

Conroe Is Making Its Pitch to Land the U.S. Space Academy

Conroe Space Academy bid

Following an executive order directing the creation of a new U.S. Space Academy, states across the country are competing to host it. Conroe is officially in the running.

The city has committed about $25,000 to develop a formal proposal and is pointing to more than 200 usable acres, established infrastructure, and its proximity to Johnson Space Center and the Houston area's aerospace industry. The proposed academy would be a NASA-led federal school designed to prepare students for careers across the space sector. NASA is evaluating locations based on site readiness, proximity to existing partners, and regional industry connections.

Texas must submit its official proposal to NASA by October 26.

Why it matters: Johnson Space Center is already nearby. If this comes through, Montgomery County adds a federal space school to that footprint.

The HVAC Company That Still Does Business on a Handshake

Spring Woodlands Air Technicians

Todd Polonski named his company Spring Woodlands Air Technicians. The initials spell out S.W.A.T., a coincidence he didn't plan, but one that tends to break the ice at the door. What earns repeat customers is something quieter: a commitment to treating people the way he'd want to be treated.

S.W.A.T. operates out of Spring and handles residential and commercial HVAC. The core of the business is residential repair and replacement, which means Todd's crew is often the one showing up for the family whose system gave out on the hottest day of the year. He started the company to do things his own way. "Building a family business that we were in control of and didn't have to do things the way that we were told to do them," he says. "We can do them the way that we thought it was right."

In practice, that means honoring warranties even when they've expired by a few days, charging a $79 diagnostic fee so a qualified technician shows up instead of a salesman, and giving customers honest advice about what actually needs fixing. The most common mistake Todd sees: waiting too long to call. A manageable repair becomes a full replacement, usually on the worst possible day.

His long-term plan is to hand the business to one of his sons. "We do business on a handshake," he says. "Our word, we keep our word."

Why it matters: when a company explains its fee and honors warranties past their date, the handshake means something.

Why did the cookie go to the doctor? Because it was feeling crumbly.
