Good morning, The Woodlands.
Twenty-eight years. That's how many times The Woodlands Township has organized the Daddy Daughter Dinner Dance, and it still fills up before most people hear about it. That's the kind of thing you only build by showing up year after year, and by families deciding that some traditions are worth protecting.
The rest of today's stories feel the same way. A military nurse from Tomball who honored a family legacy across 25 years of service and came back to give more. A concert venue whose grants quietly put an artist in a hospital lobby and a community art program in a studio in Grogan's Mill. Legacy is patient work. Today's edition has three good examples of it.
Glad you’re here,

The Pavilion's Big Idea: Concerts Fund Art at the Hospital and in the Community
There's a saying at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion: "Rock Pays for Bach." Live Nation concerts draw the crowds, but this Woodlands nonprofit directs much of what they generate back into the community. This year, the Pavilion funded more than $1.3 million in grants. A new category called the "Big Idea" grant is pushing that mission well beyond arts education.
"It's the only grant we have that non-arts organizations or schools can benefit from currently," says Cameron Klepac, the Pavilion's vice president of strategy and engagement. The board's charge, she says: "Turn up the volume on the mission."
Two recent Big Idea grants show what that looks like in practice. At Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital, local artist Annette Palmer now spends one day a week as an artist-in-residence, setting up her easel in the lobby and visiting patients in their rooms, offering a welcome distraction from the stress of a hospital stay. A second grant connected Project Beacon (which serves adults with neurodiversities) with The Woodlands Art League. Clients visited the studio, learned techniques from Art League artists, and created original work. Several pieces were auctioned at Project Beacon's gala, and an art show is planned for 2027 at the Kevin Brady Community Center in Grogan's Mill Village Center.
Why it matters: The Pavilion's mission reaches well past the stage. From hospital rooms to community art studios, the concerts here quietly fund some of the most personal work in town.

From Tomball to Landstuhl and Back: Col. Becky Stokes-Poths Named One of Houston's Most Influential Women
Retired Air Force Colonel Becky Stokes-Poths grew up in Tomball as a third-generation military medic. Her grandfather was a World War II flight surgeon. Her father served as an Army medic. After graduating from Baylor University's nursing school, she followed that family tradition into the Air Force in 1993 and spent the next 25 years caring for service members around the world.
Her career reached its highest stakes at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany, the only U.S. Level II Trauma Center located overseas. Positioned near Ramstein Air Base, Landstuhl served as the sole medical bridge for service members wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan. As Air Force Chief Nurse there, Stokes-Poths oversaw nursing operations, coordinated aeromedical evacuations, and managed care transitions for those coming directly out of combat. She retired in 2017.
Since then, she has worked with Joint Commission Resources, led infection prevention at MD Anderson Cancer Center, and now runs her own consulting firm, TXAFRN Consulting LLC. She teaches at the University of St. Thomas and Lone Star College in Montgomery, and volunteers with Henry's Home Horse and Human Sanctuary in Conroe. This month, she was named one of Houston's Most Influential Women for 2026.
Why it matters: A daughter of Tomball who carried a multigenerational legacy of service through combat zones and came back to give more to the community she started from.

Registration Is Open for the 28th Annual Daddy Daughter Dinner Dance
The Woodlands Township Parks and Recreation Department has opened registration for the 28th Annual Daddy Daughter Dinner Dance. This year's theme is "Winter Wonderland." The event takes place Saturday, February 13, 2027, from 6 to 9 p.m. at The Woodlands Waterway Marriott, 1601 Lake Woodlands Drive.
Registration is $190 per pair, with $85 for each additional daughter. Space is limited and the event is expected to sell out quickly, so early registration is encouraged. Call The Woodlands Township Parks and Recreation Department at 281-210-3950 to register.
Why it matters: Twenty-eight years in, this tradition still fills up fast. That says plenty about what it means to the families who keep coming back for it.

🌳 Woodlands Trivia
For years, the City of Houston had its eye on annexing The Woodlands. In 2007, state legislators approved a bill allowing The Woodlands to form its own independent government, settling the question on the community's own terms. Senators Tommy Williams and Robert Eissler carried the legislation.
